A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Exim (Mail Server Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. transports/appendfile.c in Exim before 4.72, when MBX locking is enabled, allows local users to change permissions of arbitrary files or create arbitrary files, and cause a denial of service or possibly gain privileges, via a symlink attack on a lockfile in /tmp/.
The weakness was published 06/07/2010 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is available at vcs.exim.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2024. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46783 (Exim < 4.72 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118355 (Fedora Update for Exim (FEDORA-2010-9524)).
Upgrading to version 4.30 eliminates this vulnerability.
