Linux Kernel 2.6.29 btrfs_ioctl_clone information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.29 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function btrfs_ioctl_clone. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The btrfs_ioctl_clone function in fs/btrfs/ioctl.c in the btrfs functionality in the Linux kernel 2.6.29 through 2.6.32, and possibly other versions, does not ensure that a cloned file descriptor has been opened for reading, which allows local users to read sensitive information from a write-only file descriptor.

The issue has been introduced in 03/24/2009. The weakness was disclosed 06/07/2010 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1636. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 440 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47525 (Fedora 13 : kernel-2.6.33.5-112.fc13 (2010-9183)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118295 (Fedora Update for Kernel (FEDORA-2010-9183)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (47525). The entry 53101 is pretty similar.
