A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader (Document Reader Software). Affected is an unknown part in the library authplay.dll of the component ActionScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Adobe Flash Player before 9.0.277.0 and 10.x before 10.1.53.64; Adobe AIR before 2.0.2.12610; and Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.3.3, and 8.x before 8.2.3 on Windows and Mac OS X, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted SWF content, related to authplay.dll and the ActionScript Virtual Machine 2 (AVM2) newfunction instruction, as exploited in the wild in June 2010.

The weakness was published 06/04/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1297. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a exploit are known.

After 4 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46852 (Adobe Reader 9 <= 9.3.2 (APSA10-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165220 (SUSE Security Update for Flash Player (SUSE-SA:2010:024)). This issue was added on 06/08/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 06/22/2022:

The impacted product is end-of-life and should be disconnected if still in use.

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9397.
