Microsoft Excel 2002 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
9.4$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft Excel 2002 (Spreadsheet Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed RTD (0x813) record, aka "Excel RTD Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 06/08/2010 by Nicolas Joly with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1246. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46845 (MS10-038: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2027452)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110124 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-038)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9820.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58913), Tenable (46845) and Exploit-DB (14966). See 51811, 53516, 53511 and 53510 for similar entries.
