Microsoft Excel 2002 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
9.4$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Excel 2002 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3 and Office 2004 for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed HFPicture (0x866) record, aka "Excel HFPicture Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 06/08/2010 by Nicolas Joly with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1248. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec and been published 4 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50066 (MS10-038: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2027452) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110124 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-038)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9822.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58913), Exploit-DB (15019), Tenable (50066), SecurityFocus (BID 40526†) and OSVDB (65235†). Similar entries are available at VDB-51811, VDB-53516, VDB-53511 and VDB-53510. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
