Adobe Flash Player prior 9.0.124.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Adobe Flash Player (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Adobe Flash Player before 9.0.277.0 and 10.x before 10.1.53.64, and Adobe AIR before 2.0.2.12610, allows attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to improper length calculation and the (1) STSC, (2) STSZ, and (3) STCO atoms.

The weakness was released 06/15/2010 by Damian Put (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2162 since 06/07/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46858 (Adobe AIR < 2.0.2.12610 Multiple Vulnerabilities (ASPB10-14)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165220 (SUSE Security Update for Flash Player (SUSE-SA:2010:024)).

Upgrading to version 9.0.124.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9397.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (46858), SecurityFocus (BID 40801†), Secunia (SA40144†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024085†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26108†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-44472, VDB-53657, VDB-53656 and VDB-53655.
