Linux Foundation xen 3.4.0/4.0.0 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

arch/ia64/xen/faults.c in Xen 3.4 and 4.0 in Linux kernel 2.6.18, and possibly other kernel versions, when running on IA-64 architectures, allows local users to cause a denial of service and "turn on BE by modifying the user mask of the PSR," as demonstrated via exploitation of CVE-2006-0742.

The weakness was shared 06/16/2010 as Bug 586415 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2070 since 05/25/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48301 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2010:0610)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118967 (VMware ESX Security Update for Third-Party Components (VMSA-2011-0003)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (59373) and Tenable (48301). The entries 51678, 51131, 52616 and 52326 are related to this item.
