Apple Mac OS X prior 10.6.0 cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the web interface in CUPS before 1.4.4, as used on Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8, Mac OS X 10.6 before 10.6.4, and other platforms, allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators for requests that change settings.

The weakness was disclosed 06/17/2010 by Kevin Finisterre (pagvac) with MIT Kerberos Team (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0540 since 02/03/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68052 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : cups (ELSA-2010-0490)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118510 (Fedora Update for CUPS (FEDORA-2010-10388)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68052), SecurityFocus (BID 40871†), Secunia (SA40220†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024122†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26084†). The entries VDB-4141, VDB-51917, VDB-53741 and VDB-53699 are pretty similar.
