Samba up to 3.2.12 process.c chain_reply null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Samba up to 3.2.12 (File Transfer Software). This affects the function chain_reply of the file process.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The chain_reply function in process.c in smbd in Samba before 3.4.8 and 3.5.x before 3.5.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and process crash) via a Negotiate Protocol request with a certain 0x0003 field value followed by a Session Setup AndX request with a certain 0x8003 field value.

The weakness was disclosed 06/17/2010 by Laurent Gaffie as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.samba.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1635. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48199 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : samba (MDVSA-2010:141)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70057 (Samba Multiple Remote Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9979.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (48199). The entry 53698 is pretty similar.
