A vulnerability was found in Matthias Klose FastJar 0.98 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function extract_jar
of the file jartool.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the extract_jar function in jartool.c in FastJar 0.98 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a non-initial pathname component in a filename within a .jar archive, a related issue to CVE-2005-1080. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2006-3619.
The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0831. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
