Matthias Klose FastJar 0.98 jartool.c extract_jar path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Matthias Klose FastJar 0.98 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function extract_jar of the file jartool.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the extract_jar function in jartool.c in FastJar 0.98 allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a non-initial pathname component in a filename within a .jar archive, a related issue to CVE-2005-1080. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2006-3619.

The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0831. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70780 (SuSE 11.2 / 11.3 Security Update : fastjar (SAT Patch Numbers 8376 / 8377)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118512 (Fedora Update for gcc (FEDORA-2010-10415)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70780). The entries 31504 and 53718 are pretty similar.
