SpringSource Spring Framework up to 2.5.0 class.classLoader.URLs[0]=jar code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in SpringSource Spring Framework up to 2.5.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file class.classLoader.URLs[0]=jar. The manipulation of the argument class.classLoader.URLs[0]=jar with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

SpringSource Spring Framework 2.5.x before 2.5.6.SEC02, 2.5.7 before 2.5.7.SR01, and 3.0.x before 3.0.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an HTTP request containing class.classLoader.URLs[0]=jar: followed by a URL of a crafted .jar file.

The weakness was presented 06/21/2010 by Meder Kydyraliev with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1622 since 04/29/2010. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Meder Kydyraliev and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86577 (Oracle WebCenter Sites Multiple Vulnerabilities (October 2015 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 2.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86577) and Exploit-DB (13918). See 78575 and 78568 for similar entries.
