Linux Kernel 3.3.5 KVM resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.3.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The KVM implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.3.6 allows host OS users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and host OS crash) by making a KVM_CREATE_IRQCHIP ioctl call after a virtual CPU already exists.

The weakness was released 05/10/2012 by Michael Ellerman as DSA-2469-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1601 since 03/12/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68527 (Oracle Linux 5 : kvm (ELSA-2012-0676)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166783 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0287-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.32-45 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75556) and Tenable (68527). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5383, 5384, 5571 and 5582.
