A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file QuickTime.qts. The weakness was presented 05/15/2012 by Tielei Wang (CHkr_D591) with Secunia as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0265 since 12/30/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59113 (QuickTime < 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
