A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome 19.0.1084.45 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. browser/profiles/profile_impl_io_data.cc in Google Chrome before 19.0.1084.46 does not properly handle a malformed ftp URL in the SRC attribute of a VIDEO element, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted web page.
The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2012 by Aki Helin (psaldorn) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 112983 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3083 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at ftp.scene.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74634 (openSUSE Security Update : chromium / v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0656-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165306 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Chromium, v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0656-1)).
Upgrading to version 19.0.1084.46 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
