GnuPG up to 2.0.16 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GnuPG up to 2.0.16. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Use-after-free vulnerability in kbx/keybox-blob.c in GPGSM in GnuPG 2.x through 2.0.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a certificate with a large number of Subject Alternate Names, which is not properly handled in a realloc operation when importing the certificate or verifying its signature.

The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2547. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68078 (Oracle Linux 5 : gnupg2 (ELSA-2010-0603)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165196 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:020)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (60970), Vulnerability Center (SBV-26614) and Tenable (68078). The entries 4148, 50944, 50937 and 55335 are pretty similar.
