Google Chrome before 19.0.1084.46 on Windows uses an incorrect search path for the Windows Media Player plug-in, which might allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse plug-in in an unspecified directory.
The weakness was released 05/15/2012 by Haifei Li (psaldorn) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.opensuse.org. The public release was coordinated with Google. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3098 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59117 (Google Chrome < 19.0.1084.46 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165306 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Chromium, v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0656-1)).
