The Windows kernel-mode drivers in win32k.sys in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 do not properly validate an unspecified system-call argument, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Bounds Checking Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 08/11/2010 by MJ0011 as MS10-048 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1887. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48285 (MS10-048: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2160329)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90627 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Privilege Elevation Vulnerability (MS10-048)).
Applying the patch MS10-048 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
