Microsoft Windows resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Double free vulnerability in the kernel in Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, and Windows Server 2008 Gold and SP2, allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, related to object initialization during error handling, aka "Windows Kernel Double Free Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 08/11/2010 by Tavis Ormandy with Google Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1889. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy in ANSI C and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48284 (MS10-047: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (981852)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90619 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS10-047)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (60705), Tenable (48284) and Exploit-DB (14667). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4162, 54342, 54341 and 54335.
