Microsoft Windows input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The SMB Server in Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not properly validate an internal variable in an SMB packet, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted (1) SMBv1 or (2) SMBv2 packet, aka "SMB Variable Validation Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2010 with Sourcefire VRT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2551. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48291 (MS10-054: Vulnerabilities in SMB Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982214)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90626 (Microsoft Windows SMB Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-054)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10075.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (60690) and Tenable (48291). The entries 4166, 54342, 54341 and 54335 are pretty similar.
