Wireshark up to 1.2.9 sigcomp-udvm.c numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown function of the file sigcomp-udvm.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The SigComp Universal Decompressor Virtual Machine (UDVM) in Wireshark 0.10.8 through 1.0.14 and 1.2.0 through 1.2.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to sigcomp-udvm.c and an off-by-one error, which triggers a buffer overflow, different vulnerabilities than CVE-2010-2287.

The weakness was presented 08/13/2010 as Bug 4867 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2995 since 08/11/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/22/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48409 (CentOS 4 / 5 : wireshark (CESA-2010:0625)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155626 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Wireshark (ELSA-2010-0625)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10864.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61104), Vulnerability Center (SBV-26811) and Tenable (48409). See 4128, 53600, 53599 and 53597 for similar entries.
