Integer overflow in the gray_render_span function in smooth/ftgrays.c in FreeType before 2.4.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted font file.
The weakness was disclosed 08/19/2010 by Robert Swiecki (Website). The advisory is available at savannah.nongnu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2500. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68074 (Oracle Linux 3 : freetype (ELSA-2010-0577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118238 (FreeType Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
