Wireshark up to 1.6.8 on SPARC/Itanium memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark on SPARC/Itanium (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.13 and 1.6.x before 1.6.8 on the SPARC and Itanium platforms does not properly perform data alignment for a certain structure member, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a (1) ICMP or (2) ICMPv6 Echo Request packet.

The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2012 by Klaus Heckelmann as wnpa-sec-2012-10 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2394 since 04/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Klaus Heckelmann and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59940 (Fedora 16 : wireshark-1.6.8-1.fc16 (2012-10175)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75812), Exploit-DB (18920), Tenable (59940), SecurityFocus (BID 53653†) and OSVDB (82100†). The entries VDB-5443, VDB-5444, VDB-6344 and VDB-6763 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
