The ReadMetaFromId3v2 function in taglib.cpp in the TagLib plugin in VideoLAN VLC media player 0.9.0 through 1.1.2 does not properly process ID3v2 tags, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted media file.

The weakness was disclosed 08/20/2010 with FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2937 since 08/04/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48334 (FreeBSD : vlc -- invalid id3v2 tags may lead to invalid memory dereferencing (e7d91a3c-a7c9-11df-870c-00242b513d7c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org.
