The Network Threat Protection module in the Manager component in Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11.0.600x through 11.0.700x on Windows Server 2003 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (web-server outage, or daemon crash or hang) via a flood of packets that triggers automated blocking of network traffic.

The weakness was published 05/22/2012 by Greg Johnson with Clear Skies Security as SYM12-007 (Website) via CERT/CC. The advisory is shared at symantec.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1821 since 03/21/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59366 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager < 11 RU7 MP2 (SYM12-007 / SYM12-008) (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120243 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Denial of Service Vulnerability (SYM12-007)).

Upgrading to version 11.0 RU7 MP2 or 12.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch SEP 11 RU7 MP2 is able to eliminate this problem.
