Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.12 and 3.6.x before 3.6.9, Thunderbird before 3.0.7 and 3.1.x before 3.1.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.7 do not properly restrict use of the type attribute of an OBJECT element to set a document s charset, which allows remote attackers to bypass cross-site scripting (XSS) protection mechanisms via UTF-7 encoding.
The weakness was published 09/09/2010 by Collin Jackson as Bug 579744 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2768 since 07/14/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49181 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2010:0680)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118595 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0681)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
