Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Quagga (Network Routing Software). Affected by this issue is the function bgp_route_refresh_receive of the file bgp_packet.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the bgp_route_refresh_receive function in bgp_packet.c in bgpd in Quagga before 0.99.17 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a malformed Outbound Route Filtering (ORF) record in a BGP ROUTE-REFRESH (RR) message.
The weakness was released 09/10/2010 as Bug 626783 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2948 since 08/04/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68154 (Oracle Linux 6 : quagga (ELSA-2010-0945)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155592 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Quagga (ELSA-2010-0785)).
Upgrading to version 0.98.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
