The Word 97 text converter in the WordPad Text Converters in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 does not properly parse malformed structures in Word 97 documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted document containing an unspecified value that is used in a loop counter, aka "WordPad Word 97 Text Converter Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2010 by iDefense Labs with iDEFENSE Labs as MS10-067 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2563 since 06/30/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/23/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49225 (MS10-067: Vulnerability in WordPad Text Converters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2259922)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90601 (Microsoft WordPad Text Converters Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-067)).
Applying the patch MS10-067 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10425.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61517), Tenable (49225), SecurityFocus (BID 43122†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27150†). The entry VDB-54718 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
