Microsoft Windows up to XP SP3 Print Spooler EmeraldThread input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP SP3 (Operating System). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Print Spooler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability (EmeraldThread). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Print Spooler service in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7, when printer sharing is enabled, does not properly validate spooler access permissions, which allows remote attackers to create files in a system directory, and consequently execute arbitrary code, by sending a crafted print request over RPC, as exploited in the wild in September 2010, aka "Print Spooler Service Impersonation Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 09/15/2010 with Microsoft as MS10-061 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2729. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2021).

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49219 (MS10-061: Vulnerability in Print Spooler Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2347290)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Applying the patch MS10-061 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10458.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61504) and Tenable (49219). See 54717 for similar entry.
