The btrfs_ioctl_clone function in fs/btrfs/ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 allows local users to overwrite an append-only file via a (1) BTRFS_IOC_CLONE or (2) BTRFS_IOC_CLONE_RANGE ioctl call that specifies this file as a donor.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 09/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2537. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1655 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51453 (Ubuntu 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : linux, linux-ec2 vulnerabilities (USN-1041-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
