Mplayerhq MPlayer up to 1.0 flicvideo.c code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

flicvideo.c in libavcodec 0.6 and earlier in FFmpeg, as used in MPlayer and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted flic file, related to an "arbitrary offset dereference vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 09/30/2010 by Felipe Andres Manzano (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3429. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53296 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS / 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : ffmpeg vulnerabilities (USN-1104-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (53296), SecurityFocus (BID 43546†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29847†). The entries VDB-56207, VDB-57472, VDB-57473 and VDB-57474 are pretty similar.
