Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 snd_ctl_new numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in the snd_ctl_new function in sound/core/control.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc5-next-20100929 allow local users to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted (1) SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_ADD or (2) SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_REPLACE ioctl call.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 10/04/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 638478 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3442. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1659 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51775 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2010:0936)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155569 (Oracle Linux 5 Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2010-2011)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (51775). The entries 4176, 55542, 55538 and 55535 are related to this item.
