RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 Protocol smil memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component Protocol Handler. The manipulation of the argument smil with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in an ActiveX control in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1 and RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long .smil argument to the (1) tfile, (2) pnmm, or (3) cdda protocol handler.

The weakness was disclosed 10/18/2010 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3751 since 10/05/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/27/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48907 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.0.879 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118442 (RealPlayer Update for Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10057.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62613) and Tenable (48907). The entries 55111, 55110, 55109 and 55108 are pretty similar.
