Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function window.__lookupGetter__ in the library js3250.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The LookupGetterOrSetter function in js3250.dll in Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.14 and 3.6.x before 3.6.11, Thunderbird before 3.0.9 and 3.1.x before 3.1.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.9 does not properly support window.__lookupGetter__ function calls that lack arguments, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (incorrect pointer dereference and application crash) via vectors involving a "dangling pointer" and the JS_ValueToId function.
The weakness was shared 10/21/2010 by regenrecht as Bug 598669 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3183. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/28/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50793 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2010:0782)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119073 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0861)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10582.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50793), SecurityFocus (BID 44249†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27793†). The entries VDB-4218, VDB-55203, VDB-55201 and VDB-55200 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
