A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in JSecurity 0.9.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file shiro.ini of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Apache Shiro before 1.1.0, and JSecurity 0.9.x, does not canonicalize URI paths before comparing them to entries in the shiro.ini file, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted request, as demonstrated by the /./account/index.jsp URI.
The weakness was presented 11/03/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3863. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:shiro.ini it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50600 (Apache Shiro URI Path Security Directory Traversal Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 0.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62959) and Tenable (50600).
