Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via crafted character sequences with EUC-JP encoding, aka "EUC-JP Character Encoding Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 06/12/2012 by Masato Kinugawa as MS12-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1872 since 03/22/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59455 (MS12-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2699988)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100116 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-037)).

Applying the patch MS12-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
