A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Title Element Change Deleted Object. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "Title Element Change Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2012 by Roman Shafigullin with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1877 since 03/22/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59455 (MS12-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2699988)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100116 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-037)).
Applying the patch MS12-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12385.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75957) and Tenable (59455). The entries 5514, 5515, 5516 and 5517 are pretty similar.
