PHP up to 5.3.3 getArchiveComment input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function ZipArchive::getArchiveComment. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ZipArchive::getArchiveComment function in PHP 5.2.x through 5.2.14 and 5.3.x through 5.3.3 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted ZIP archive.

The weakness was disclosed 11/05/2010 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at svn.php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3709 since 10/01/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Maksymilian Arciemowicz and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75431 (openSUSE Security Update : apache2-mod_php5 (openSUSE-SU-2011:0276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86938 (HP System Management Homepage Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBMA02662)).

A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75431) and Exploit-DB (15431). The entries 55425, 55386, 57272 and 57271 are pretty similar.
