A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD 1.2.10/1.3.0/1.3.1/1.3.2/1.3.3 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component mod_site_misc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the mod_site_misc module in ProFTPD before 1.3.3c allow remote authenticated users to create directories, delete directories, create symlinks, and modify file timestamps via directory traversal sequences in a (1) SITE MKDIR, (2) SITE RMDIR, (3) SITE SYMLINK, or (4) SITE UTIME command.
The bug was discovered 10/29/2010. The weakness was presented 11/09/2010 by TJ Saunders (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3867 since 10/08/2010. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50553 (Fedora 13 : proftpd-1.3.3c-1.fc13 (2010-17098)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27337 (ProFTPD Directory Traversal and Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10641.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62909) and Tenable (50553). See 55410 and 55392 for similar entries.
