ProFTPD 1.3.2/1.3.3 Telnet netio.c pr_netio_telnet_gets memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD 1.3.2/1.3.3 (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function pr_netio_telnet_gets of the file netio.c of the component Telnet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the pr_netio_telnet_gets function in netio.c in ProFTPD before 1.3.3c allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving a TELNET IAC escape character to a (1) FTP or (2) FTPS server.

The weakness was published 11/09/2010 by TJ Saunders (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4221 since 11/09/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/28/2021).

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70446 (ProFTPD TELNET IAC Escape Sequence Remote Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27337 (ProFTPD Directory Traversal and Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10641.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62908) and Tenable (70446). Similar entries are available at 55403 and 55392.
