A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD 1.3.2/1.3.3 (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function pr_netio_telnet_gets
of the file netio.c of the component Telnet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the pr_netio_telnet_gets function in netio.c in ProFTPD before 1.3.3c allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving a TELNET IAC escape character to a (1) FTP or (2) FTPS server.
The weakness was published 11/09/2010 by TJ Saunders (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4221 since 11/09/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. Upgrading to version 1.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10641.
