Integer underflow in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 SP3 and 2003 SP3, PowerPoint Viewer SP2, and Office 2004 for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PowerPoint document, aka "PowerPoint Integer Underflow Causes Heap Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 11/09/2010 by TheLeader (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2573 since 06/30/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/28/2021).
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50528 (MS10-087: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2423930)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110137 (Microsoft PowerPoint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-088)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10630.
