HP LaserJet MFP Default Configuration path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in HP LaserJet MFP (affected version not known) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Default Configuration. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The default configuration of the PJL Access value in the File System External Access settings on HP LaserJet MFP printers, Color LaserJet MFP printers, and LaserJet 4100, 4200, 4300, 5100, 8150, and 9000 printers enables PJL commands that use the device s filesystem, which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a command inside a print job, as demonstrated by a directory traversal attack.

The weakness was presented 11/16/2010 by Moritz Jodeit with n.runs AG (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4107. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by n.runs AG in Ruby and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69480 (HP LaserJet PJL Interface Directory Traversal (HPSBPI02575)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43200 (HP Multiple LaserJet Printers PJL Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (63261), Tenable (69480) and Exploit-DB (15631).
