A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 5.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, and before 4.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.4, does not properly perform a cast of an unspecified variable during processing of inline styling, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted web site.
The weakness was published 11/22/2010 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT4455 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3809. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/05/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50653 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 5.0.3 / 4.1.3), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118741 (Apple Safari Prior to 5.0.3 and 4.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50653), SecurityFocus (BID 44957†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28349†). Similar entries are available at VDB-55524, VDB-55523, VDB-55522 and VDB-55521. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
