Apple Safari up to 5.0.2 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 5.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, and before 4.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.4, does not properly perform a cast of an unspecified variable during processing of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) boxes, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted web site.

The weakness was presented 11/22/2010 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT4455 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3819. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/20/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50653 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 5.0.3 / 4.1.3), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118741 (Apple Safari Prior to 5.0.3 and 4.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50653), SecurityFocus (BID 44963†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28357†). See VDB-55524, VDB-55523, VDB-55522 and VDB-55521 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
