A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component m3u Playlist Handler. Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple iTunes before 10.6.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted .m3u playlist.
The bug was discovered 03/13/2012. The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2012 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab as HT5318 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at zeroscience.mk. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0677 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Gjoko Krstic in Perl and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 90 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59499 (iTunes < 10.6.3 m3u Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120285 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-06-11-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12698.
