Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The ipc subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.37-rc1 does not initialize certain structures, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via vectors related to the (1) compat_sys_semctl, (2) compat_sys_msgctl, and (3) compat_sys_shmctl functions in ipc/compat.c; and the (4) compat_sys_mq_open and (5) compat_sys_mq_getsetattr functions in ipc/compat_mq.c.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 11/29/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648658 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4073. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Jon Oberheide in ANSI C and been published 10 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1715 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55784 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1186-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55784) and Exploit-DB (17787). See 55571, 55569, 55568 and 55563 for similar entries.
