Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 setup_arg_pages resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected is the function setup_arg_pages. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The setup_arg_pages function in fs/exec.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36, when CONFIG_STACK_GROWSDOWN is used, does not properly restrict the stack memory consumption of the (1) arguments and (2) environment for a 32-bit application on a 64-bit platform, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted exec system call, a related issue to CVE-2010-2240.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 11/30/2010 by Roland McGrath as Bug 645222 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3858. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Roland McGrath in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1675 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68277 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2011-0836)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165554 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:012)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (15619), Tenable (68277), SecurityFocus (BID 44301†), OSVDB (69551†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28472†).
