Race condition in the __exit_signal function in kernel/exit.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.37-rc2 allows local users to cause a denial of service via vectors related to multithreaded exec, the use of a thread group leader in kernel/posix-cpu-timers.c, and the selection of a new thread group leader in the de_thread function in fs/exec.c.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/30/2010 as Bug 656264 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4248 since 11/16/2010. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51426 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155552 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel Security, Bug Fix, and Enhancement Update (ELSA-2011-0004)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (51426). The entries 55571, 56004, 56003 and 55923 are pretty similar.
