The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The copy_semid_to_user function in ipc/sem.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36 does not initialize a certain structure, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a (1) IPC_INFO, (2) SEM_INFO, (3) IPC_STAT, or (4) SEM_STAT command in a semctl system call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 11/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648673 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4083. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51426 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
