Andy Armstrong CGI.pm up to 2.30 CGI::Simple code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Andy Armstrong CGI.pm up to 2.30 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CGI::Simple. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

CRLF injection vulnerability in the header function in (1) CGI.pm before 3.50 and (2) Simple.pm in CGI::Simple 1.112 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via vectors related to non-whitespace characters preceded by newline characters, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-2761 and CVE-2010-3172.

The weakness was presented 12/06/2010 by Masahiro Yamada (Website). The advisory is shared at nntp.perl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4410. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75709 (openSUSE Security Update : perl-CGI-Simple (openSUSE-SU-2011:0083-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165187 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:005)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (75709). See 55634, 55627, 56204 and 56172 for similar entries.
