Mozilla Firefox prior 1.5 Fonts input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Fonts. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.16 and 3.6.x before 3.6.13, Thunderbird before 3.0.11 and 3.1.x before 3.1.7, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.11 do not properly validate downloadable fonts before use within an operating system s font implementation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to @font-face Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) rules.

The weakness was presented 12/10/2010 by Marc Schoenefeld with Mozilla as Bug 527276 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3768. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68159 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2010-0969)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118874 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0966)).

Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68159). See 4223, 55712, 55711 and 55710 for similar entries.
